4 WEEK INTERIOR CREW COURSE

Working in a superyacht interior is a world away from ordinary hospitality.

You’re part of a professional crew, living and working at sea while delivering an exceptional standard of service to guests.

PYT’s 4-Week Interior Crew Course gives new crew a practical introduction to both sides of the job: the maritime environment you’re entering and the interior skills you’ll use onboard. From seamanship and safety to service, detailing, laundry, food and beverage, you’ll spend four weeks getting ready for your first role at sea.

STCW Included • IYT Training • Practical Interior Training • Durban, South Africa

WHAT WILL MY FOUR WEEKS LOOK LIKE?

FIRST, LEARN BASIC ONBOARD SKILLS.

Your first week introduces you to the language, customs and practical skills of life at sea.

Much of the training is hands-on, covering:

  1. Seamanship & Ropework: Knots, ropework, nautical terminology and understanding the main parts of a vessel.
  2. Boat Handling & Helming: Basic helming, docking lines, anchoring and practical boat-handling skills.
  3. Safety & Crew Drills: Crew procedures, tender drills and an introduction to Collision Regulations.
  4. Weather & On-Water Awareness: Basic weather forecasting and developing practical awareness while operating on the water.

It’s your introduction to the maritime world you’re about to become part of.

Superyacht interior work is detailed, fast-paced and highly service-focused.

This week introduces you to the practical skills used by interior crew and the level of organisation and presentation expected onboard.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Bar, Wine & Food Service: Mixology, wine service, food service and professional meal presentation.
  • Interior Care & Housekeeping: Cleaning, detailing, laundry and maintaining high onboard standards.
  • Table Styling & Presentation: Table setting, napkin folding, garnishes, flower arranging and platter presentation.
  • Planning & Provisioning: Menu planning, financial management and budgeting for interior operations.

The aim is to start developing the eye for detail, service awareness and professional habits that good interior crew need.

BEFORE YOU WORK AT SEA, YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO STAY SAFE AT SEA.

Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Basic Training Module defines the essential safety and security training required for all persons employed at sea.

You’ll complete:

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR): Understand your responsibilities as professional crew, including onboard conduct, chain of command, health and safety, and conflict resolution.
  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST): Learn essential survival-at-sea skills, including water rescue, life raft handling and safe boarding procedures.
  • Elementary First Aid (EFA): Learn how to respond to onboard injuries and emergencies using CPR, wound care, patient handling and basic fracture management.
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF): Understand how fires start and develop, and learn practical techniques for fighting fires and responding safely onboard.
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD): Learn to recognise security threats, control vessel access, conduct security searches and carry out assigned onboard security responsibilities.

Tenders are part of everyday life on many yachts, and being able to handle one is a useful deck skill.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Boat Handling & Launching: Practical boat handling, launching, recovery and safe operation of a RIB.
  • Safety & Emergency Procedures: Safety at sea and man-overboard procedures.
  • Basic Navigation: Collision Regulations, ship’s lights and nautical terminology.
  • Ropework & Anchoring: Essential rope-handling skills, anchors and practical anchoring procedures.

Deck students who successfully demonstrate the required practical ability and pass the written examination can be issued the IYT Small Powerboat & RIB Master Certificate of Competency.

The certificate gives you a recognised qualification within its applicable operating limits.
